Dr. Smith Leggett is Chairman of the Board of the Southwestern Petroleum Short Course. He is an Assistant Professor in the Bob L. Herd Department of Petroleum Engineering at Texas Tech University, where he teaches production and facilities engineering, artificial lift, and multiphase flow. Dr. Leggett founded the Texas Tech Gas Lift Consortium, a partnership with industry focused on improving gas lift and production from mature wells. His research combines field testing, multiphase flow modeling, and fiber optic sensing to address challenges in artificial lift and geothermal production. His geothermal research includes work at Utah FORGE using downhole measurements and production diagnostics to study the performance of an enhanced geothermal system. Before joining Texas Tech, Dr. Leggett worked in production engineering and field operations at Occidental Petroleum . He holds a Ph.D. in petroleum engineering from Texas A&M University and a B.S. in mechanical engineering from the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Leggett credits his wife, who homeschools their five children, with having the harder job. Their family enjoys spending time outdoors and serving at International Christian Fellowship.
