Gas lift underinjection is a persistent operational challenge that can reduce production and destabilize well performance when compression systems fail to deliver targeted injection gas volumes. Compressor shutdowns, liquid accumulation, low fuel quality, scrubber malfunctions, and freeze-ups can interrupt gas delivery and prolong underinjection. This paper evaluates an automated compression optimization system designed to maintain stable gas injection by improving liquid handling, reducing compression shutdown triggers, as well as capturing and recycling methane emissions.

The field evaluation was conducted throughout 2024 using two groups of gas compressors associated with 281 gas-lifted wells across the Permian Basin. The first group of compressors was equipped with the automated optimization system, while the second group operated without optimization and served as the reference group. The assessment primarily focused on compressor underinjection while also examining downtime and major shutdown triggers that disrupt the continuity of gas injection, as well as their impact on well unloading efficiency, oil production, and associated revenue.

The optimized compressors achieved 93% reduction in underinjection duration, resulting in more consistent gas injection and improved well unloading conditions. Supporting reliability improvements included a 96% reduction in scrubber liquid level shutdowns, 78% reduction in engine panel shutdowns, and an 86% reduction in low-engine oil pressure shutdowns. Collectively, these improvements produced a 94% reduction in compressor downtime. The system also recycled methane from leaking sources, including scrubber dump line and rod packing vents, back to the compressor as dry fuel rather than releasing it to the atmosphere.

The study findings highlight the effectiveness of automated compression optimization in addressing gas lift underinjection and maintaining consistent gas injection. By improving compression reliability, minimizing operational disruptions, and recycling methane emissions, the system provides a scalable approach to enhance gas lift performance, sustain oil production, and improve operational efficiency across gas lift and midstream applications.
