Overhead Electrical System Design for Oil-Field Environments

Tuesday, April 21st, 2026

This comprehensive course is designed to equip engineers and field personnel with foundational and advanced knowledge for designing safe, efficient, and reliable overhead electrical systems specifically tailored to oil-field environments. Participants will gain an understanding of the purpose and scope of overhead powerlines up to 25 kV, as well as the critical codes, industry standards, and requirements necessary for developing an effective electrical basis of design.

The curriculum covers both structural and mechanical design considerations, including the selection of appropriate pole materials and the siting and spacing requirements in relation to surface facilities, pipelines, and roadways. Attendees will delve into essential electrical design requirements such as load flow analysis, line sizing, voltage levels, conductor properties, phase configurations, grounding techniques, insulation practices, and strategies for system protection and the coordination of protective devices.

Special emphasis is placed on line crossings and interface points, addressing best practices for safely designing crossings over pipelines, roadways, other distribution lines, and transmission lines. Safety is a key focus, with modules dedicated to energy isolation equipment, proper verification methods for ensuring safe work conditions and lockout procedures, as well as arc flash hazards, labeling, and the control of approach boundaries.

The course also explores oil field-specific challenges, including power factor correction, harmonic mitigation, and the prevention of line strikes caused by moving equipment such as drilling rigs and construction vehicles. By the end of the course, participants will be prepared to apply industry best practices to overcome the unique challenges associated with overhead electrical systems in oil-field settings.
